Post traumatic stress disorder is defined as an anxiety disorder precipitated by an experience of intense fear or horror while exposed to a traumatic (especially life-threatening) event; the disorder is characterized by intrusive recurring thoughts or images of the  traumatic event; avoidance of anything associated with the event; a state of hyper arousal and diminished emotional responsiveness; these symptoms are present for at least one month and the disorder is usually long-term.  (definition  from dictionary)

I know for sure my late husband acquired  P.T.S.D. symptoms  after the Vietnam War.  He was given  a band aid for his symptoms they never looked for a cure. The pharmaceuticals from the doctors over the years where to manage symptoms only.

When this did not work, he did the only thing he knew to do and that was to self medicate by becoming an alcoholic and while still having P.T.S.D. So not only did they not cure the P.T.S.D. but gave him an added  bonus of alcoholism because he served his country!

Lydia’s Story

My experience begins with the man I married, a Vietnam Vet who saw and was in the trenches with his buddies losing limbs and lives, who sadly came home from the war with PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He was reclusive, staying away from us get into his head and start drinking alcohol and I would blame myself cause at the time the army did not give wives info on what to expect from your husband when he came home from the war. He had horrific nightmares that would be so loud & hellish that even my neighbors came to me and ask me what was going on. It was as though someone was trying to kill him. When he heard loud popping noises he would duck & throw himself on the ground. It was so frightening for our family.

MY TRAUMATIZATION

One night I woke up with his hands around my neck, I was gasping for air. He was fast asleep as he was doing this. I felt like I was turning blue like I was dying, taking my last and final breath when he stopped, he looked so rigid, he got off of me and laid back down.

I ran and ran like hell out of the house and stayed with a neighbor for a week. 

Another time he was talking in Vietnamese coming after me.  At full force he was breaking mirrors, he acted like he had a rifle pointed at me. As as soon as I could I ran for my life again. I was so traumatized by him, He was subconsciously in his waken sleep.
